New Steam: 3.0
Subscribers have started to receive the October issue of Computer Gaming World, which features nothing short of a Valve bonanza – including the revelation that Steam platform updates have been thin on the ground in recent months due to development of the ‘rearchitectured’ version 3.0. This is a major turning point in Steam’s history, and the news is all the more welcome because 3.0 is so well developed, already running in a basic state alongside 2.0 on all client computers. There is of course no official release date, but expect it to come shortly before a game release, probably Aftermath.
There isn’t any information yet on just what 3.0 is, but rest assured that you will find it here as soon as it is known, and possibly sooner!

steamclient.dll
That is Steam 3. It was brought in when VAC2 was released. Try looking inside it for the string "steam3".
For one thing, it seems to have Friends more closely built in.

I'd always assumed it was VAC2. Makes much more sense this way. The article itself mentions how we're running 2 and 3 simulatneously too, so it all fits. Thanks for the tip!
Makes a lot of sense, really. Especially as to why that file is steamclient.dll, not vacclient.dll or something. I'm just wondering what the overall picture is here, especially as servers posess a steamclient.dll too.
